Photos of the strategic tree relocation process at The Pike
On Monday, January 27th work began to “uproot” and “reposition” key aspects of the Pike design – the existing on-site specimen trees. Crews arrived in the morning to begin the strategic process of excavating and boxing three large Ficus Rubiginosa trees. The 9ft x 9 ft boxed trees were then carefully moved on a flatbed truck under bridges and across streets and craned into their place in the new design. This was followed by the relocation of four 22.5 foot tall Canary Island Date Palms which surround the main pedestrian plaza.
Located just a short walk from the Long Beach office, the Pike is a repositioning of an entertainment venue into a world-class outlet center. After ten years of architectural and commercial shortcomings, the project is being completely re-imagined to be the destination which links downtown Long Beach to the shoreline. Updates to the center include: recirculating vehicular traffic away from the new pedestrian-only central plaza, all new lighting and site furnishings, connecting the new retail building to the parking structure. This new connector will provide stronger pedestrian circulation from the theater to parking and to shoreline visitor activities at two levels. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by May 1, 2015.
On Tuesday, January 13th, Studio One Eleven presented the Gundry at Hill Affordable Housing Project to the Signal Hill Planning Commission. The proposed development is comprised of 72 units arranged to support a village scaled environment.
During the presentation, Michael Bohn with Studio One Eleven shared that one quarter of the site will be dedicated to open space, visible from Hill Street. Buildings will vary between one, three, and four stories high with the tallest massing located at the lowest portion of the site, and will be composed of various materials such as cementitious siding, planks, and panels complemented with stucco and brick. HE also added that parking will be concealed from the streets.
All of the planning commissions and community members showed support for the proposed development noting their delight for the material and color choice as well as the innovative design that makes the development feel more like a high-quality market rate community and less like standard affordable housing. They further communicated their excitement for the project by adding that it seamlessly fits into the community with a unique sense of place – one that they would be proud to live in.
Construction on Gundry at Hill Affordable Housing is slated to begin at the end of 2015.

As the 2014 Qingdao Horticultural Expo in Qingdao, China came to a close in late October, the Studio One Eleven and P+R Shanghai designed “Long Beach Garden” took home the Gold Award for this year’s Outdoor Garden Competition. Mou Jundian, Deputy Director and general of Qingdao Municipal Foreign Affairs Office noted, “The exquisite and innovative Long Beach Garden has won great popularity among the visitors, and has played an important role in promoting the cultural exchanges and enhancing the friendship of our people.”
Studio One Eleven worked alongside the Long Beach-Qingdao Sister Cities Association, a longtime supporter of the horticultural exposition, to create an exhibit that would demonstrate the event’s theme of “From the Earth, For the Earth.” This year, 37 countries participated in the expo that welcomed over four million to a culturally diverse, environmental learning experience.
The last week has brought much attention to Studio One Eleven and Meta Housing’s anticipated Signal Hill affordable housing project. After Michael Bohn and other project leaders lead tours of their previous collaboration, the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony, the Signal Tribune published an article about the current and future implications of Studio One Eleven’s newest project in Long Beach.
Last week, the community tours of Senior Arts Colony allowed the public and city officials to see “the kind of architecture and environment that is expected for the Signal Hill project.” Tonight, the design will be brought to the Signal Hill Planning Commission at a public hearing for review. If all goes well and eventual tax credits are obtained, construction on the project is slated for December 2015.
In anticipation of a warm reception and a successful kick-off, Michael Bohn told Signal Tribune reporters, “We’re very dedicated to enhancing communities through architecture, design and landscape. We’re excited to be working in Signal Hill.”
