The Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA, in collaboration with Studio One Eleven, revealed the AIA Long Beach/ South Bay award winning, new design for their facility. The center was first established in 1958, and has become an integral part of the Lakewood Community and will build upon their success with the modern renovation and addition.
A before and after of the Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA.
The new facility doubled to 32,000 square feet, adding an exercise room, family changing area, yoga room, teen center, children’s center, boardroom and kitchen. The addition and renovation has contributed to a 50% increase toward the facilities existing 5,000-person membership.
“The expanded Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA by Studio One Eleven is smart, new, and well-considered architecture,” notes Lakewood historian D. J. Waldie. “It’s essential that an older suburban community find ways to interpret the past in its future. Sensitive to its context, the YMCA addition admirably meets the needs of Lakewood’s 21st century residents while recalling the optimism of mid-century design.”
Through thoughtful design concepts and collaborative efforts, the Weingart-Lakewood Family YMCA officially presented the facility to the Lakewood community, City of Lakewood officials and key project team members. Congratulations to the Lakewood YMCA and to everyone who was involved on making the project a success.

Our project 1044 Maine, located within the Willmore Historic District near Drake Park in Long Beach, was recently awarded “Project of the Year” by the 55+ Housing Council during the Sage Awards Ceremony.
As stated by the jury, “The Judges were impressed by the level of care taken to repurpose this building. Creating a vibrant development while providing the necessary senior housing is a noble effort, and the development team did this with great detail and finish.”
Once an abandoned, crime-ridden, courtyard apartment building; now stands a creative, vibrant, affordable, senior focused development. The building was originally created in the 1920’s with virtually no improvements until Studio One Eleven took the existing six studio and one-bedroom apartments and reconfigured them into four studio, five one-bedroom and two two-bedroom units.
The renovated project has been embraced by the community for replacing a blighted building with a restored historic asset accompanied with modern conveniences.
